Role - Lead Product Designer

Sun Racing is a digital platform offering comprehensive coverage of horse racing events, news, tips, and insights. It provides enthusiasts with up-to-date information, expert analysis, and betting advice to enhance their racing experience.

Sun Racing needed to launch a couple of new products consisting of an iOS app and a new website with the aim of bringing horse racing closer to the future generations. My job consisted in leading the design, creating new features and defining the product within a crossfunctional team. I worked on the project for 7 months from researching and concepting, wireframing and testing to an end product.

DISCOVERY

I kicked off the project conducting user research to unveil user behaviours and pain point.

I conducted an online survey and I interviewed users to understand their mentality and what's the process they go through when placing a bet and what motivates them to check a race in the first place. I found three main insights.

Users check primarily big races that happen on weekends and mostly only bet on these.

The form (performing history) of a horse is key in the decision to choose it and place a bet.

When users pick a horse they want to bet on, they close their horse racing app or website and go directly to the bookmaker site.

ACTIONS

Based on the information from the online survey and user interviews and the insights found, I wrote down three main key points to be developed into features for the app and/or website.

In order to keep users within the iOS app I developed an idea for a bet tracker where users can check future and past bets they've made.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

I worked with a crossfunctional team with developers and a product owner on byweekly sprints.

These started with a brief from the product owner, followed by competitor research and sketching some initial ideas and user flows. The next step was to do a low fidelity prototype of one or two of the most feasible ideas that I then would share with the tech team, PO and stakeholders. Together we finished defining some technical aspects and final details and determined the MVP and next iterations. I tested the prototypes and iterated on them depending on the results until achieving the desired success to move into development.
